I just acquired the reissue of Columbia ML4739. Mitropoulos conducts what was the Phil Symph of New York, now renamed the New York Philharmonic. The work is Shostakovitch. The original cover is one of the last designs Steinweiss did for Columbia, in 1955. It is not one of my favorite Steinweiss designs. The reissue is early 1960s. Kind of generic, the type of cover that gives classical music record covers a bad name. It has a nice enough layout, and a small drawing by Jacob Landau. I bought it for the drawing – Landau is my cousin. I don’t love his work, but family ties are the ties that bind. It is interesting to me how fast graphic design changes – the 1955 cover was considered insufficient only a few years later, even if the work was still monophonic and therefore not the hottest thing in marketability.
