Darrill Connelly and Darrill Connelly

Here are four designs by Darrill Connelly. One of them also shows a reissue with a different catalog number, OL instead of ML Most of his work at Columbia was illustrations that he did for covers designed by others, mainly Steinweiss. These four may be entirely his own work. There are not many covers like that. If the Masters of the Keyboard are not his designs, just his illustrations, at least they allowed him a larger canvas. I love these Masters ones, and wish I had the other 2 or 3.

I’m so pleased to see a website that honors the creative work of Darrill Connelly. I worked for Darrill at Connelly Design as a graphic designer for approximately 15 years before he sold his studio to a woman who retained the name of the studio for another 5 years before changing it. Darrill was quite a character and a delight to work for. The creative atmosphere was that of “family”. If he liked your work, he left you to your own devices and allowed you to problem solve and promote yourself to clients. It was a unique environment in which I flourished. I have not seen Darrill in quite a few years but I am still in touch with his wife Emily as well as almost all of my co-workers that worked at Connelly Design between the years of 1980 and 1995.
