I am on the road. I have brought with me a bunch of jpgs but don’t yet have access to upload them. so, a few comments on record cover books will have to do for now.
One of the best books on record covers is Storm Thorgerson’s Classic Album Covers of the 60s. Great illustrations, been in print in many editions for a long time. Thorgerson has the theory that record covers were mediocre until the rise of psychedelia in the late 1960s. Great theory, well defended by his chosen illustrations. Sadly, it shows again how a little history is a dangerous thing. The covers from the 40s into the 50s were simply not known to him when he wrote the book. I call the 40s the first golden age of the record cover, and agree with Thorgerson that the late 60s were the second golden age.
Nevertheless, great book, I highly recommend it.
