South Pacific

In 1949 Columbia brought out the soundtrack to the Broadway show South Pacific on the three formats available then: 78 rpm set, 45 rpm set, and lp. This is my personal collection of the covers of these. Next post I will show some others that I don’t have. The lp was originally ML 4180, and was later changed to OL 4180, putting it in the soundtracks/shows category instead of the classical. The overprinted version is a favorite – if this was a postage stamp it would be worth a fortune. Steinweiss designed this cover, which remained in use off and on for over 50 years, eventually showing up on the CD. Note the color variants of the lp.
